PAST TO PRESENT
Mykonos is an island of the Aegean Sea and belongs to the complex of Cyclades. Along with Delos, Rhenia and some other skerries, Mykonos is composing a single island complex. Chora is the capital of the island. Mykonos was one of the first islands that met touristic development. Thousands of tourists have came to visit the island since the decade of 1960’s, and have established Mykonos as one of the most touristic islands in the Mediterranean.
Mykonos town charms the visitor from the first time due to its amazing location and architecture. Mykonos composes a unique landscape of beauty for the visitors with the cubic scheme houses, the numerous whitewashed cobbled paths and the windmills that stand still for centuries same as the red domes and the bell towers of the countless churches.
At Ftelia area, excavations have revealed a settlement from the Neolithic era, circa the 5th millennium BC. Archaeological excavations at Chora have brought to light a Mycenaean tomb from the 14th-13th century BC and many more significant findings. This tomb is one of most famous ones in Cyclades. It is said that this tomb might belong to a Trojan hero, Ajax of Lokris, son of the king of Lokris, Oileas.
However, nothing compares to the emotions inspired by the evocative ruins of ancient Delos. In mythology, Delos is said to be the birthplace of the gods Apollo and Artemis. For this reason Delos was a sacred site during the ancient times. During the Hellenistic and Roman periods, the island became an important commercial centre and it is estimated that it had around 30,000 residents. A whole town with streets and markets, public buildings and temples, luxurious buildings and stores, cisterns, mosaic columns and ancient wells everywhere around, bathed in sunlight, they spread between the hill of Kynthos and the harbor with the crystal clear waters are all giving the visitor the impression that they just stopped working yesterday.
Mykonos welcomes hundreds of thousands of tourists each year, including many celebrities from around the world, establishing the island as one of the most popular in Greece. At the streets of Mykonos, with Matogianni being the most popular, one can find too many stores with labelled clothes, expensive jewellery and art collections.
While on holidays in Mykonos, enjoy a coffee or ouzo, as well as many other tasty treats in Chora, at the scattered cafes, bars and restaurants, while checking the crowd that wanders the streets of the town. Chora also composes a great starting point for someone to discover the picturesque interior of the island, the stunning beaches, with regular buses and other means of transportation. Nowadays, the nightlife of Mykonos is considered to be the most vibrant and alive in Europe.
